Dr. Schatz is a pediatrician who has been involved in type 1 diabetes research since the mid-1980s. The majority of his research has focused on the prediction, natural history, genetics, immunopathogenesis and prevention of type 1 diabetes, as well as the management of type 1 diabetes in children and adolescents.

Dr. Schatz earned his medical degree from the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa. He is board certified in pediatrics and pediatric endocrinology.
The recipient of several NIH awards, Dr. Schatz has served on the Board of Directors of the American Diabetes Association as well as numerous committees. He has also served on study sections for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) and American Diabetes Association and serves on editorial boards of several journals. Dr. Schatz is a widely published author, having published over 150 manuscripts. He is board certified in pediatrics and pediatric endocrinology.
