Driving to Stop Diabetes…NASCAR’s
Diagnosed 2 years ago with type 1 diabetes, NASCAR Nationwide driver Ryan Reed is still in the driver’s seat. Decked out with a new American Diabetes Association Drive to Stop Diabetes paint scheme, his No. 16 Ford Mustang will compete in several 2013 NASCAR races.
Only 17 when diagnosed, Ryan had been racing his whole life and did not intend to let type 1 diabetes ruin his budding career. Rather than stop racing, as he was told he would have to do, Ryan continued to drive in both the ARCA Racing Series and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.
Along the way, he has become an advocate for diabetes awareness, even starting his own foundation, Ryan’s Mission.
The Drive to Stop Diabetes campaign is a collaboration between Ryan’s Mission and the American Diabetes Association. It will include awareness and educational efforts at all NASCAR Nationwide races and several off track health/wellness events. One hundred percent of all net-proceeds will go to the American Diabetes Association.
“As one of the nearly 26 million people living in the U.S. with diabetes, Ryan Reed is an inspiring individual,” says Larry Hausner, Chief Executive Officer, American Diabetes Association. “His voice is critical to spreading awareness and educating communities across the country about this disease.”
